As winter approaches, any drivers planning road trips to Sweden or Germany need to ensure their vehicles are equipped with the appropriate winter tires. New regulations in both countries mandate the use of winter tires marked with the ‘Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake’ symbol between December 1 and March 31. This symbol features a mountain with a snowflake inside.

Travelers crossing the Øresund to Sweden without tires bearing this symbol could face fines of nearly 800 kroner. The Danish motorists’ organization FDM advocates for similar regulations in Denmark, where such mandates do not currently exist. Dennis Lange, a chief consultant at FDM, has expressed frustration over the lack of action from politicians, especially given that last winter highlighted the need for such requirements.

While Denmark lacks winter tire mandates, both Sweden and Germany now require winter tires with the snowflake symbol for winter driving conditions. Not all winter tires are approved in these neighboring countries; only those featuring the symbol with a mountain and three peaks will comply with regulations. Tires lacking this emblem can result in fines in Sweden.

The introduction of these winter tire rules aims to enhance safety for drivers navigating winter weather. Dany El Four, director of Pitstop Dækcenter, supports the new regulations, stating they significantly improve safety for all road users and expressing the desire for similar legislation in Denmark. Despite the absence of a legal requirement, many Danish drivers are reportedly proactive about equipping their vehicles with winter tires, as evidenced by an uptick in inquiries about winter tire installations.
