Tampere plans parking fee increase next year, says Ilkka Porttikivi
The city of Tampere is planning to increase parking fees next year, as confirmed by Ilkka Porttikivi, the chair of the city’s Environmental Committee and deputy mayor. According to Porttikivi, the exact details of the fee increases will be determined at the end of the year.
The proposed hike is estimated to be around ten percent and will apply to all parking zones. Currently, parking in Tampere’s city center is divided into three pricing zones. In the most expensive zone, the core city area, parking costs €3.20 per hour. If a ten percent increase is implemented, the hourly rate would rise to €3.52.
The increases are prompted by a recent value-added tax (VAT) hike and rising costs. In September, the VAT was raised from 24 to 25.5 percent, effectively reducing the income generated from parking fees. Porttikivi emphasized that it would seem illogical to adjust parking fees by the small margin of 1.5 percent given the new VAT, leading to odd pricing structures.
Furthermore, plans for the fee adjustments take into account general cost increases experienced in recent years and previous decisions to delay fee raises due to tram construction projects. Porttikivi noted that the city’s budget is under pressure and additional revenue is necessary, with parking fees being part of that solution.
In terms of current rates:
– Zone 1: Parking costs €3.20 per hour on weekdays.
– Zone 2: Parking costs €2.00 per hour on weekdays.
– Zone 3: Parking costs €1.20 per hour on weekdays.
