Svandís clears office as Iceland’s coalition government dissolves ahead of elections

In preparation for the upcoming elections, Svandís Svavarsdóttir, the leader of the Left-Green Movement, has cleared out her office at the Ministry of Infrastructure, marking the end of her ministerial role. As of today, she and other ministers from her party will transition to regular parliamentary members.

“This is a significant turning point. I have been part of this coalition since 2017, which has often presented challenges,” said Svandís. She expressed pride in her involvement, stating, “I believe we have primarily been working for the benefit of society.”

The decision to dissolve the coalition government reportedly came from the Prime Minister without prior consultation with the allied parties. “We feel there has been a breach of trust in those communications without conversations with the leaders of the other governing parties, leading us to this conclusion,” she added.

As the political landscape shifts, Svandís acknowledged the gravity of the moment and the changes ahead. The government’s future direction remains uncertain as various parties prepare for the upcoming electoral contests, with many citizens expressing a mix of relief and concern regarding the dissolution of the coalition. The Píratar (Pirate Party) has announced plans to hold primaries across all constituencies, while other factions are contemplating the formation of new alliances. This period is anticipated to be crucial in shaping Iceland’s political future as the nation braces for the 2024 parliamentary elections.
