Labour Party faces turmoil over Trond Giske’s candidacy in Trondheim
The situation surrounding Trond Giske and the Labour Party (Ap) in Trondheim is evolving. Giske was initially selected as the leading candidate for the parliamentary list, but was then rejected by the nomination committee, with only one out of nine members supporting his candidacy. Following feedback from local party branches, the Trondheim Ap expressed a desire to reinstate Giske on the parliamentary list. However, the nomination committee has submitted its final proposal, which again excludes Giske.
The chair of the nomination committee, Roar Aas, expressed satisfaction with the committee’s work, highlighting the thoroughness and responsiveness to local branch input. According to Aas, a majority of party branches support the nomination committee’s current proposal.
The proposed list from the majority features candidates including Per Olav Skurdal Hopsø and Sara Shafighi, among others. Conversely, the minority proposal includes Giske alongside a few others.
Currently, 14 local party branches endorse the majority list, while three support an alternative with Giske in a high position. As the party prepares for a vote on November 30, the outcome remains uncertain, with opinions divided.
In addition, discussions within the party reveal ongoing tensions, particularly regarding Giske’s candidacy. Calls for unity and a focus on collaboration surface amid personal attacks and discord within the party. The future direction for the Labour Party in Trøndelag remains to be seen as they finalize their candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections. A meeting is scheduled to finalize the candidate lists for both North and South Trøndelag on the same date.
