A pod of pilot whales that was tagged near Klaksvik in the Faroe Islands a month ago is now moving steadily south without any interruptions.
The whales have traveled approximately 1,200 nautical miles and are currently located at latitude 52 degrees. Their average speed has been about two nautical miles per hour, indicating a consistent southward movement, according to the Faroe Marine Research Institute.
The marked whales feature blue and green stripes as identified in the Fuglafjord area, while the whales tagged in Klaksvik are identified by red and light red stripes.
Meanwhile, the pilot whales from Fuglafjord, which have been monitored for more than a month, have remained predominantly further north, particularly in the vicinity north of Rockall Bank. However, in the past two days, this group has also started moving northward and is now located in the waters between Ytra Bank and Ytstabank, as reported by the Marine Research Institute.
