Iceland prepares for parliamentary elections as political parties finalize candidate lists

Political parties in Iceland are gearing up for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for November 30. With just over two weeks left to submit candidate lists, the electoral commission has officially initiated the election process, according to its director.

The deadline for political parties to submit their lists of candidates is noon on October 31. This allows for the commission to review the lists from November 4 to November 6, enabling early voting to commence shortly after. Voting by mail could start as late as November 7, which marks 23 days before election day.

These will be the first parliamentary elections held under the new electoral laws that came into effect at the start of 2022. The last parliamentary elections took place on September 25, 2021.

The electoral commission’s director emphasized that preparations are in full swing, involving consultations with various authorities, including district and municipal electoral officials and the national registry. Despite the tight timelines, the commission is ready to handle the election logistics, mindful that unexpected changes can still occur. All stakeholders are currently on standby as the election process unfolds.
