Political debate erupts in Sweden over gang connections to leadership
In a recent political debate, Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar criticized Sweden Democrats (SD) leader Jimmie Åkesson, arguing that the credibility of society is at stake when gang criminals are connected to political leadership. The controversy arose after a president of a criminal motorcycle gang was invited to Åkesson’s wedding. Åkesson defended himself, claiming he was unaware of the guest’s criminal background and described the incident as a mistake.
Dadgostar suggested that there may be leverage against Åkesson from criminals, which led to a strong rebuke from him. “These are some of the most bizarre accusations I’ve faced in 30 years,” Åkesson replied. Dadgostar also mentioned claims that the gang president had attended parties at Åkesson’s home for a decade, which Åkesson denied, accusing Dadgostar of lying.
Tempers flared further when discussing youth crime, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasizing the need for both the Sweden Democrats and Social Democrats to clarify their connections to criminal gangs. “Let the rest of us discuss serious politics,” Kristersson asserted.
The Social Democrats have been embroiled in controversy after revelations that their affiliated lottery company had aggressively sold tickets through an external firm associated with gang criminals. Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson stated that they acted swiftly upon discovering the situation, terminating the contract immediately. She refuted claims about gang ties at Åkesson’s wedding, asserting, “I had no gang criminals at my wedding. You do not treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves.”
