Kyttä wreck confirmed in Lake Puula by divers near Mikkeli

On October 13, 1910, the eight-meter-long vessel Kyttä sank in Lake Puula while towing a barge. Fortunately, the crew managed to escape to safety. Osmo Kinnunen, a wreck hunter from Taipalsaari, received a tip earlier this summer about the ship’s possible sinking location. This was confirmed using a sonar device.

By the end of September, divers confirmed the wreck’s identity by visiting and documenting it, according to Ismo Talka, who is knowledgeable about maritime history. The Kyttä, built in the late 19th century at a Helsinki shipyard, served as a tugboat primarily transporting logs. At the time of the accident, it was towing an empty barge.

Talka highlighted that Kinnunen, using a rowboat and sonar technology, has identified over a hundred wrecks during this search season alone. Lake Puula is a large body of water located west of Mikkeli, extending into the areas of Hirvensalmi and Kangasniemi.
