A political science professor anticipates that the government’s fate will be determined in the coming days. There is a growing expectation that the coalition may not survive if party leaders continue to present each other with ultimata. Professor Ólafur Þ. Harðarson suggests that the next few days will be critical in deciding whether the current government remains in power.

The leaders of the governing parties have remained tight-lipped about the situation, though the Independence Party has asserted that other parties will not corner them. Harðarson believes discussions are happening between the leaders. “The way this evolves depends entirely on the leaders of the three coalition parties. The question is whether they genuinely want to resolve the issues, which could be done through compromises, or if they’re merely presenting each other with hardline choices, which would lead to the collapse of the government,” he commented.

Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, the chairman of the Progressive Party and Minister of Finance, highlighted on social media that if the coalition partners do not feel capable of adhering to and working on the government agreement, it must be addressed immediately. Harðarson observed, “This shows the desire to resolve the matter, and it’s critical to clarify whether the government will be dissolved or not.”

He stressed that if parliament is dissolved, elections must be held within 45 days. Should dissolution occur today, elections would take place on November 27. “If the situation drags on beyond the immediate future, we could be looking at elections in December, which, although not unheard of, is generally seen as undesirable.”
