Former doctor Arne Bye charged with raping 88 women in Frosta, Norway
A former community doctor in Frosta, Arne Bye, is facing charges for raping “Marianne” and 87 other women between 2004 and 2022. Marianne, whose real name is undisclosed for privacy reasons, describes her shock at the allegations against Bye, who she trusted for over 20 years. She recalls how he always took the time to care for his patients and was revered in the small community.
The scandal emerged in July 2022 when Bye’s medical license was suspended after reports of inappropriate behavior. As the investigation unfolded, more women came forward with complaints, leading to a total of 88 charges. Marianne said the experience has been difficult to comprehend and has significantly impacted her mentally.
She was contacted by the police in September 2022 due to her presence in the evidence collected against Bye. During her initial questioning, she believed he had not harmed her, but as the details unfolded, she began to realize the gravity of the situation. Marianne is now grappling with feelings of betrayal and confusion, having recommended Bye as a reliable doctor to friends and family.
The community, with around 2,600 residents, has been deeply affected by the case. Many people are hesitant to discuss it, mirroring the silence and isolation experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the trauma, Marianne is determined to face Bye in court, as the trial begins November 5 in Trøndelag. She believes it is crucial for him to be held accountable for his actions.
