For the first time, children and young-at-heart viewers in the Faroe Islands can enjoy a feature film in the Faroese language at the cinema.

Preliminary indications suggest that the public has a strong desire for entertainment in their native tongue, as over 3,000 tickets were sold in advance before the first public screening, which took place yesterday. This marks the highest number of pre-sale tickets for a film in the Faroe Islands, according to Mourits Clementsen, director of Havnar Bio.

The success of the initial showing highlights the growing interest in films that resonate with local culture and language, providing families the opportunity to enjoy cinematic experiences together in Faroese. The movie’s release is viewed as a significant step toward promoting the Faroese language in popular media, reflecting a broader trend of valuing indigenous languages in entertainment.

More screenings are expected to follow, with hopes that this initiative will pave the way for future projects in the Faroese language, further enriching the cultural landscape of the islands.
