White waxy balls have been spotted along the coast of Telemark, particularly in Bamble. The Norwegian Coastal Administration and local authorities are uncertain about the type of wax and the extent of its spread. There is reason to believe that the wax might originate from a boat that has washed its tanks, although this has not yet been confirmed. The municipality has urged residents to avoid the affected areas for the time being, and it remains unclear whether the substance poses any harm to local wildlife.

On Wednesday, residents in the vicinity reported the discovery of the substance to the municipality. Jan-Olaf Kristoffersen, a special adviser with the Inter-Municipal Committee for Acute Pollution in Telemark, stated that samples have been taken, but it is still unknown what type of wax it is. The substance has been observed from Hydrostranda to Valle, prompting aerial surveys by the Coastal Administration.

Ingrid Johanne Lauvrak, a senior adviser at the Coastal Administration, mentioned that while white material was spotted from an aircraft, weather conditions hampered the assessment. A follow-up aerial survey is planned for Friday when the weather is expected to improve. Authorities are collaborating closely with the municipality to analyze the substance and determine its potential effects on marine life.

Steinar Hansen, a local inspector, expressed concern over the environmental impact, stating the substance resembles Styrofoam and has accumulated on boats, docks, and beaches. Bamble Mayor Jon Pieter Flølo confirmed that cleanup efforts will commence as soon as they receive clarity about the substance and its implications. He has requested that residents and visitors stay away from affected zones until further notice.
