Denmark sends staff officer to U.S. Pacific Fleet headquarters in Honolulu

Employees at the U.S. Pacific Fleet headquarters in Honolulu, Hawaii, will soon welcome a Danish colleague in the form of a staff officer. This marks the first time Denmark has sent a staff officer to the Hawaii headquarters, which employs 375,000 personnel.

The officer will report back to Denmark, establish networks, and, over time, advise the Danish defense chief on military contributions to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Experts suggest that Denmark’s engagement in the region is timely, as the U.S. is expected to seek increased support to deal with China, seen as a primary threat to the international order.

In 2022, NATO acknowledged China, particularly its actions in its own region, as an issue that needs to be addressed. The U.S. has been shifting its military focus toward China and the Pacific, in response to Chinese assertiveness towards allies like the Philippines and Taiwan.

Several European allies, including Norway, France, and the UK, are already participating in exercises in the Pacific. Denmark may soon join these operations, which aim to demonstrate that territories claimed by China are actually open international waters.

The Chinese navy is expanding annually, and experts note that U.S. efforts to bolster military presence in the Pacific have faced challenges due to ongoing conflicts in other regions. The Danish officer’s assignment is partly a response to U.S. support for Denmark concerning Russian threats in Europe.

While the current plan is primarily for a staff officer deployment, Denmark is prepared to provide additional resources should the political landscape change, underscoring the real risk of military conflict in a region increasingly fraught with tensions between the U.S. and China.
