Man released from prison after fatal stabbing incident in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland

A 19-year-old man, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for fatally stabbing a 27-year-old man in Hafnarfjörður 18 months ago, has been released and is currently serving his sentence in an alternative facility known as “Vernd.” The incident occurred at Fjarðarkaup in April 2023.

The man was sentenced by the district court in November of the previous year, with the time he spent in pre-trial detention being deducted from his overall sentence. “Vernd” is part of a rehabilitation program outside of traditional prison settings. The interim director of the prison administration stated that a variety of factors determine the possibility of early release, including the type of offense committed.

Due to his young age, the man is required to serve only one-third of his sentence, which totals four years. This period can be further reduced based on the time spent in pre-trial custody, electronic monitoring, which can last up to 12 months, and his stay at Vernd.

The interim director noted that assessments regarding a prisoner’s behavior and any potential substance abuse issues also play a role in determining eligibility for early release. There are specific criteria that need to be met, and the focus is often on ensuring that the individual spends an adequate amount of time in a secure environment before being eligible for alternative arrangements.

The man’s original 10-year sentence was increased to 12 years by the court of appeals. The interim director highlighted the need to evaluate each case individually, expressing difficulty in assessing whether it is unusual for someone to be released within a year of receiving a 12-year sentence.
