Man guilty of assaulting neighbors in Oulu District Court

The Oulu District Court issued an interim ruling on Friday regarding a local man who assaulted two of his neighbors. The court found the man guilty of acts of violence. He reported suffering from severe mental health issues during the incidents. A final ruling will be presented once a psychological evaluation is completed; the man was ordered to undergo these assessments in July.

The violent incidents occurred in May. In the first instance, the man approached a neighbor’s front door in the early hours and accused them of knocking on their door or the roof of their apartment. He then struck the neighbor in the face. Just days later, the man attacked another neighbor, a 70-year-old, on the property of their housing association.

According to the interim ruling, the man assaulted the elderly victim multiple times using both his fists and a shovel. During the attack, he dragged the victim into the building’s stairwell and pushed the elderly individual down the landing. The assault continued as the victim fell down the stairs into the basement of the building. The violence ended when the police arrived following a tip-off from a bystander, who also witnessed the events.

In court, the man confessed to struggling with serious mental health issues at the time and admitted to the violence against both neighbors, expressing remorse. He claimed there was no reason for attacking the elderly neighbor but felt compelled to do so by some external prompting. While he partially acknowledged the violence, he denied having used a shovel during the incident. However, the prosecutor stated that the evidence suggests he hit the victim with the shovel. The court confirmed that the shovel was used based on evidence, but conclusive proof of the blow to the head was lacking. The prosecutor seeks a prison sentence for assault and attempted manslaughter, with the court’s final stance on charges and penalties to await the conclusion of the mental health evaluation.
