Two pilot whale pods, marked in September, have traveled extensively.
The Marine Research Institute marked one pod in Fuglafjørður on September 3 and another in Klaksvík on September 16.
According to the Institute, the pod marked in Fuglafjørður has made a trip to the Faroe Bank. After encountering the marked Klaksvík pod at Hatton Bank about a week ago, it returned south into Hatton Depth, where it originated. However, it later turned back towards the Faroe Islands. Once it reached the northern Bank Ridge, it paused for two days before heading back into the Faroe Bank.
The pod made a brief stop at the Bank before continuing southwards, passing through Rosemary Bank and moving towards Rockall.
Meanwhile, the pod marked in Klaksvík has steadily traveled south, initially in an easterly direction but more recently towards the south. It has moved past Edoras Bank, located south of Hatton Bank, and is now in an area referred to as Eriador Ridge.
The total distance traveled by these pods is approximately 800 nautical miles, as reported by the Marine Research Institute.
