Two lottery winners each received just over 5.9 million krónur tax-free after sharing Saturday’s first prize, mbl.is reported.
One winner, a woman in her 50s, was sitting in front of the television with her husband on Saturday evening when she suddenly felt she should check her lottery ticket.
“It was almost as if something was nudging me to open the app and look at the ticket,” she said in a statement from Icelandic Getspá.
When she opened the lottery app, she saw that all her numbers were correct. It took her time to believe that she had won more than 5.9 million krónur.
“I think I went into the app again and again throughout the weekend to make sure it was still there and that it had not just been a dream,” she said.
The other winner, a man just over 50 who lives in the capital area, had the ticket through a subscription and did not know he had become millions of krónur richer.
Employees of Icelandic Getspá repeatedly tried to contact him on Monday morning, but his phone was switched off. When they finally reached him later that day, the reason became clear: he had worked a night shift and was sleeping soundly while they tried to tell him about the win.
