Dog owner fined 230,000 krónur in Greater Reykjavik for unauthorized euthanization of sick pet
A dog owner in the Greater Reykjavik area has been fined 230,000 Icelandic krónur for euthanizing his sick dog himself, according to the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (Matvælastofnun). The act took place outdoors, as the owner decided to end the dog’s suffering with a gunshot.
Under current regulations, only licensed veterinarians are permitted to euthanize pets, except in legitimate emergency situations, which did not apply in this case. The fine imposed was significant, especially considering that the standard fee for euthanizing a dog at a veterinary clinic is around 17,000 krónur.
Additionally, a horse owner in Northeastern Iceland received daily fines of 10,000 krónur for failing to comply with orders from Matvælastofnun to reduce the risk of accidents involving his horses and to improve their care.
Meanwhile, a dairy farm in Southern Iceland was stripped of its milk sales license due to poor milk quality.
These enforcement actions highlight efforts by Icelandic authorities to ensure the humane treatment of animals and compliance with veterinary regulations.
