Danes express divided opinions on Israel’s military operations in Gaza one year after conflict began
The ongoing conflict in Gaza, despite being thousands of kilometers away, has sparked strong emotions domestically. Today marks one year since Israel commenced its military operations against Hamas in Gaza. Since then, thousands of Danes have taken to the streets in solidarity with civilians caught in the conflict. According to the Gaza health ministry, the war has claimed over 40,000 lives in Palestinian territories.
A recent Epinion survey found that 45% of respondents believe Israel’s military actions in Gaza have been “excessive.” The war began in response to a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the abduction of 250, as reported by Israeli authorities. Israel claims the aim of its operations is to eliminate Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the EU and the US.
Among surveyed individuals, one in five deemed Israel’s military actions as “appropriate” or “not interventionist enough.” While many members of Hamas have lost their lives, many civilians have also been affected, prompting the International Criminal Court in The Hague to investigate Israel for potential war crimes following accusations from South Africa regarding violations of the UN Genocide Convention.
The survey involved 1,021 representative respondents who were asked about their views on Israel’s military operations following the initial Hamas attack. A significant portion, 22%, responded with “don’t know,” while 13% chose not to answer, highlighting a reluctance to engage with the sensitive topic. This polarizing nature of the debate has led many citizens to remain neutral, indicating a complex landscape of opinions surrounding the conflict.
