Denmark increases troop presence in Latvia to enhance NATO’s deterrent capabilities

NATO has been on high alert since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, prompting a reassessment of its defense and deterrence strategies. While NATO remains the largest military alliance, the focus has shifted from assessing capabilities on paper to establishing a rapid deployable force in response to real threats. This adaptation sees Denmark stepping up its commitment by increasing its troop presence that can mobilize quickly.

The alliance’s overhaul of military plans was necessary after parts of Ukraine were occupied. The aim is to remove bureaucratic delays and deploy units already stationed in potential conflict areas, with equipment and supplies readily available. Specifically, Danish soldiers are set to be deployed to Latvia, where they have prepared alongside allied forces.

Latvia is seen as a vital area for Denmark, functioning like a backyard, where Danish forces are expected to help secure NATO’s eastern flank. The living conditions for troops have improved at Camp Valdemar, transitioning from temporary tents to more permanent barracks.

Public support for Denmark’s military involvement in Latvia is strong, with a recent survey indicating that 66% of citizens agree that Danish soldiers should engage in defense if any Baltic state is attacked. The government has also considered involving conscripts in future deployments, indicating a long-term commitment to NATO’s collective defense in the region.

As preparations continue, future Danish soldiers may find themselves frequently stationed in Latvia, ready to respond within ten days to any threats, enhancing NATO’s deterrent capabilities.
