Concerns are mounting regarding wage violations associated with the staffing agency Seigla, which has faced increasing scrutiny from labor unions in Iceland. Seigla is the third staffing agency owned by the same individuals operating in the country. The lawyer representing Seigla has denied claims of wage violations within the company.

Currently, 34 wage violation cases are active against Seigla at the labor union Hlíf. This issue gained attention in spring 2023 following an incident where a Seigla employee was assaulted, prompting assistance from the union. Since then, numerous additional cases have emerged, with union representatives noting a significant influx of complaints from current and former employees.

The owner of Seigla, Halla Rut Bjarnadóttir, and the agency’s lawyer, Skúli Sveinsson, refute the claims, stating that only one wage violation case has been formally brought to court, which relates to a legal interpretation issue in European law. Sweinsson insists that allegations of extensive breaches of labor agreements are unfounded and merely pertain to differing legal interpretations.

The controversy surrounding Seigla has been discussed in the media, including a recent investigative program that highlighted ongoing labor abuses and inadequate regulatory oversight. Responses following the program’s airing have been significant, with contractors and property management companies reaching out to inquire about specific staffing agencies and their ethical standing. This has created a marked demand for increased transparency and accountability from businesses regarding labor practices.
