Sunday 16th August 2026 on 22:00 in Iceland

European Union, Iceland, referendum

mbl.is is broadcasting a debate on European Union membership from Harpa on Sunday evening, less than two weeks before Iceland’s referendum on the issue on August 29.

The event, organised by the Paradigm association, begins at 8pm. Participants will argue both for and against EU membership.

Members of parliament Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson and Diljá Mist Einarsdóttir, both from the Independence Party, will speak for those planning to vote no.

Jónas Hagan and Hjálmar Vilhjálmsson will represent those planning to vote yes. Both sit on the board of Já til að sjá, a recently established movement supporting a yes vote.

The debate is expected to last about two hours, with no break scheduled.
