The incident occurred during a parliamentary debate about Sweden’s decision to abstain from voting in the United Nations General Assembly concerning the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. On Friday, the Foreign Minister stated that immediate actions are expected to ensure safety. “The parliamentary chamber is the stronghold of democracy; we must be able to feel secure while debating. There should never be a risk of objects being thrown at us. My initial reaction was instinctive; I didn’t know what was being thrown, so I chose to leave,” she said.

Niklas Åström, the Chief of Security in the Parliament, commented that they are reviewing their security protocols following Thursday’s incident where a tomato was thrown. “We are not ruling anything out. It’s completely unacceptable for objects to be thrown into the chamber of the Swedish Parliament.” Åström noted that operational security measures have already been implemented, but any significant changes regarding the building’s technical safety or rules on visitors will be addressed later.

Following the incident, three individuals were detained for disturbing the proceedings and were later released.

A video showing footage from the Parliament is available, illustrating the scene during the debate, along with images of the chamber and members present at the time.
