A man who collided with the side of a fisheries inspector’s boat in Ikaalinen has been ordered to pay 14 daily fines for endangering traffic safety. The incident occurred on August 2 at Lake Kyrösjärvi. A fisheries inspector from the Pirkanmaa Fisheries Centre and a local operator were checking permits for crayfish traps when the man, speeding in his boat, came close to the inspection vessel and crashed into it.
Initially, authorities considered whether the incident could be classified as violent resistance against a public official. However, Police Commissioner Panu Rautio from the Central Finland police confirmed that the person who collided with the boat did not recognize the individuals on board as fisheries inspectors.
“The man believed that the inspectors were emptying his crayfish traps,” Rautio explained. Despite wearing an official identification card and a cap indicating his role, as well as having “Pirkanmaan Kalatalouskeskus” written on the side of the boat, this was not enough to alert the motorist to the inspectors’ presence.
The fines were imposed because the man failed to exercise the necessary caution while navigating his watercraft, resulting in the collision. The fishing inspectors’ boat sustained minor damages, and the Pirkanmaa Fisheries Centre demanded €100 in compensation for the material damages. The man has since paid the compensation, and the investigation into the incident has been closed.
