According to Finland’s Central Crime Prevention Agency (KRP), the incident involving a drone colliding with the Pasila telecommunications tower was not an act of espionage. In mid-July, an individual flew a drone in the vicinity of Yleisradio’s office and the Helsinki police station in Pasila, eventually crashing it into the tower. Operating a drone in this area requires special permission.

The case was initially investigated as a potential espionage incident due to its proximity to critical infrastructure. Crime Commissioner Petri Partanen stated that the suspect was questioned earlier this week, and no evidence of espionage intent was found. “It was purely an accident involving an inexperienced young man,” he noted. As more information emerged, the charge was downgraded from espionage to a violation of aviation regulations, which could result in a fine.

The suspect was reportedly flying a small drone for only the second time. Partanen explained that during the flight, there was a communication error, causing the drone to become uncontrollable and ultimately collide with the tower. “It likely experienced interference while flying over the railway tracks, given the numerous electrical lines present,” he added.

After the crash, the drone remained lodged in the mast, from where it was retrieved by a representative of the telecom operator, Digita. The police reviewed all footage captured by the drone and found no images of critical infrastructure. Partanen emphasized that the suspect has been straightforward throughout the investigation, was a properly registered drone user, and was aware of the no-fly zones.
