On Friday morning, nearly 200 bags remained unclaimed at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport due to a significant failure in the luggage transport system that occurred the previous day. Airlines have been working to transport these bags to their respective destinations throughout Thursday, overnight, and into Friday morning.

The issue began early Thursday at around 4 AM when the flow of luggage onto aircraft was halted. At its worst, approximately 1,500 bags were left stranded before a contingency handling system was put into operation. “We’ve managed to resolve the situation efficiently,” said Jani Elasmaa, the airport’s deputy director.

Overall, several thousand bags were delayed, impacting the timely loading of aircraft and causing several flight delays. The operator, Finavia, has identified the cause of the malfunction “with a high degree of certainty.” Elasmaa indicated that a router was responsible for the disruption. Currently, the system is being tested with support from the device and component manufacturer to replicate the fault under controlled conditions and implement necessary repairs to prevent future incidents.

The disruptions on Thursday affected thousands of passengers in various ways, leading to significant congestion in the departures area during the morning rush. “There were only a few cancellations or missed connections,” Elasmaa noted. Many bags were left in an open area of the departure hall as passengers hurried to board their flights. Elasmaa confirmed that no bags have been reported missing. “The bags were always under supervision.”
