Landslide causes significant damage on Svartárdalsvegur in Húnabyggð

Significant damage has occurred on Svartárdalsvegur in Húnabyggð following a landslide this morning. The landslide, which took place around 10 AM, created a deep chasm in the road that must be filled.

Authorities report that the landslide seems to have originated lower on the hillside, just above the road. Evidence from photographs suggests that it moved quickly and spread widely. Efforts are currently underway to fill the gap in the roadway.

Local farmer Guðmundur Guðbrandsson noted that there has been excessive rainfall recently, effectively isolating the area. He expressed concern about the potential impact on livestock, as there is uncertainty about the safety of sheep that may have been caught in the landslide.

Jón Kristinn Helgason, an avalanche monitoring specialist, indicated that this is a localized event and said it is challenging to predict whether more landslides could occur. However, he added that the weather forecast indicates dry conditions for at least the next few days, which should reduce the likelihood of further landslides.

According to the Road Administration, the damage is more extensive than initially believed. Plans are in place to complete temporary repairs by this evening to allow for safe passage between areas. Residents are advised to exercise caution as the road remains in poor condition.
