A landslide occurred in Svartárdal this morning, cutting off the road and leaving the area nearly inaccessible. Local farmer Guðmundur Guðbrandsson reported that the landslide has significantly impacted the region, causing substantial damage to the road. While travel over the highlands is still possible, it is not feasible for regular passenger vehicles. There is currently no confirmation whether any sheep were caught under the landslide.

Recent heavy rain over the past weeks and months has contributed to the situation. Jón Kristinn Helgason, an expert with the Icelandic Meteorological Office, described the landslide as having a reasonable mass. Although the drop height was not extensive, the slide spread quite widely, suggesting it may have fallen with considerable speed. Authorities are en route to the area to begin cleanup efforts.
