Travelers urged to exercise caution as snowfall complicates driving in Lapland, Finland
Travelers in Lapland this weekend should remain cautious on the roads, as snowfall may complicate driving conditions. Elsewhere in Finland, residents can expect brisk autumn weather.
On Friday, most of the country will experience dry conditions, with the exception of Lapland, where a precipitation zone is moving in. Northern Lapland will see significant snowfall, particularly in the Enontekiö, Inari, and Utsjoki areas, where the Finnish Meteorological Institute warns of poor driving conditions. “Snowfall may be quite heavy, with up to ten centimeters expected. However, in Southern and Central Lapland, it will primarily be rain,” says meteorologist Elias Paakkanen.
By Saturday, the precipitation zone will move away from Lapland, resulting in a mostly dry day across Finland. While isolated rain showers may occur, the overall picture is expected to be rather clear and sunny throughout the country.
Looking ahead to Sunday, a new precipitation zone is predicted to approach from the west. It will mostly bring rain, although there may be some snowfall on the northern edge of the system. “It’s still uncertain exactly where this precipitation will hit,” Paakkanen notes.
Weekend temperatures will remain typical for early October, with daytime highs in southern Finland reaching just above ten degrees Celsius, while temperatures in Lapland will hover around five degrees. Overnight, temperatures may drop below freezing, especially in southern areas if clear weather prevails.
