Three bear cubs killed by train in Kolho, Mänttä-Vilppula
Three bear cubs were killed by a train in Kolho, Mänttä-Vilppula, on Tuesday. The train was traveling from Orivesi towards Haapamäki. The South Finland Police received an emergency call around 11:30 PM on Tuesday night, reporting that a mother bear had crossed the tracks about 500 to 1,000 meters ahead of her cubs, which were then struck by the train. The deceased cubs were found during the night on the tracks and nearby. Authorities have not observed the mother bear in the area and do not believe she was injured in the incident. It remains unclear whether the dead cubs were still dependent young or older individuals, as dependent cubs are typically under two years of age. The deceased cubs will be sent to the Finnish Food Safety Authority for further examination.
