Flooding is likely to threaten the center of Vejle again in the future, with experts warning that climate change will lead to wetter weather. In response, Vejle’s climate, nature, and environment committee has proposed eight specific measures to better prepare the city for heavy rainfall. However, these measures would not have prevented the flooding experienced by residents last Friday, nor would they have made a significant difference by cleaning the river, according to committee chairman Søren Peschardt.
Peschardt emphasized that merely dredging the river is not a viable solution to prevent floods, stating that more complex strategies are needed to manage water retention in the Vejle River system. He acknowledged that while deeper dredging could enhance water flow, it would not have substantially mitigated previous flooding events.
Kristian Dürr, an engineer and flood guard in Vejle Municipality overseeing the dredging project, noted that sand deposits have narrowed the river’s profile, affecting water flow. Though he expressed frustration about the limited impact of the dredging, he acknowledged the necessity of starting the project.
The plan to straighten the river to expedite water drainage was developed after flooding in February, but the work remains unfinished due to budget constraints. Peschardt confirmed that funding is allocated in next year’s budget to address this project. For now, the municipality aims to improve water flow through current efforts and will eventually work on the new river profile to enhance drainage capacity.
