Helsinki police received a report early in the morning regarding a suspected drunk driver in the Jätkäsaari area. An eyewitness called emergency services, stating they had seen an intoxicated individual behaving suspiciously around a vehicle before getting inside.

Officers arrived quickly on the scene and apprehended the suspected driver before he could drive off. During the arrest, the suspect resisted to some extent. “To get him out of the car, we had to restrain him enough that a small firearm dropped from one of his clothing items to the ground,” said Teemu Lappalainen, the chief of the Helsinki police.

The firearm was functional but appeared to be illegal, according to Lappalainen. The suspect did not point the weapon at the police, nor had it been used in Jätkäsaari prior to the arrest. At the moment, Lappalainen could not provide information on why the arrested individual was carrying a weapon or whether he was known to the police before this incident.
