The Oulu police department has been testing a new Skoda Kodiaq SUV for nearly a week, and early reports indicate positive feedback. According to Senior Constable Pekka Tervo, this vehicle serves as an excellent new tool for their operations, with its transport space offering improvements over previously piloted models. Currently, there are only two of these police patrol vehicles in the entire country, with the other one operating in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

The Skoda Kodiaq is equipped with essential police equipment, including a police radio, computer, radar, license plate reader, and video camera. Chief Inspector Marko Törmänen noted that the new vehicle is more maneuverable than traditional police vans and provides enhanced ergonomics for both drivers and detainees.

The design of the Kodiaq’s detention area allows for monitoring from the front, and it is insulated to enhance officer safety. “There is no risk of grabbing or spitting on police personnel,” stated Törmänen. Moreover, the vehicle is more cost-effective compared to conventional patrol vans; Törmänen mentioned that four of these SUVs can be outfitted for the price of three traditional ones.

If the experience proves satisfactory, the police administration may consider acquiring additional SUVs. However, Törmänen clarified that these new vehicles would not entirely replace all current vans and saloon cars. For instance, in Oulu, where there are over a dozen patrol vehicles, he envisions that three to four could be substituted with this model.
