Couple’s deaths in Neskaupstaður remain under investigation as forensic results awaited

Authorities are still awaiting critical results from forensic analyses related to the deaths of a couple in Neskaupstaður in August. The detainment order for the man suspected of having caused their deaths is set to expire on Friday.

Kristján Ólafur Guðnason, chief of police in East Iceland, announced that they are yet to receive important data and results from forensic examinations conducted abroad. He expressed hope that results will arrive within the month, which would allow the investigation to proceed to the next steps.

An autopsy has been completed, but it is premature to disclose any findings about the cause of death at this time. Kristján refrained from commenting on whether a weapon was involved.

Currently, one person remains in custody, suspected of the couple’s deaths. A psychiatric evaluation has been completed for this individual, but a decision regarding the continuation of the detainment remains pending. This decision is expected to be clarified later in the week.

The police in East Iceland are still processing evidence gathered during the investigation, which involves specialists from the capital’s police department.
