For the past decade, discussions have been ongoing regarding the construction of a major sports and recreation center in Jyväskylä, Finland, known as the Hippos project. Today, these discussions reached a resolution when the city council approved the landmark project with a vote of 55 to 9, with three council members abstaining.

Once completed, the Hippos center will be nearly twice the size of Tampere’s Nokia Arena. The complex will feature a sports center capable of accommodating 2,000 spectators, a 6,000-capacity ice arena, and a competence center that includes research, education, office, and restaurant facilities. Additionally, there will be three training ice rinks, a sports park, and parking for nearly 1,000 vehicles.

The Hippos project is one of Finland’s largest sports construction initiatives of the 2020s, aimed at revitalizing aging sports facilities in Jyväskylä to meet the growing demand due to the city’s expansion. Enhanced sports opportunities are intended to promote the well-being and health of residents while solidifying Jyväskylä’s position as a significant hub for sports and recreation on an international scale.

Construction is expected to begin before the end of this year. The project faced several delays starting from its initial planning in 2014, primarily due to numerous appeals. However, a recent financial agreement was reached with Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken for a leasing model, amounting to around €70 million for the sports center and €75 million for the ice sports center, to be financed over 20 years.

While the city council’s approval is a significant milestone, the decision is not yet legally binding, as there is a 30-day window for municipal appeals. Nonetheless, the city can commence preparations for construction, which would need to be halted if the administrative court identifies any issues.
