Earthquake measured at 3.7 magnitude near Myrdalsjökull in Iceland

A significant earthquake occurred in the Myrdalsjökull glacier area this morning just before 6 AM. The quake registered at a magnitude of 3.7, located in the northern part of the glacier’s caldera. According to a natural disaster specialist, only a few aftershocks have been detected, and this seismic activity is typical for this time of year.

Sigríður Kristjánsdóttir, the expert, noted that the earthquake is likely not related to Skálm, although it’s challenging to determine definitively. She also reported that a minor glacial flood took place in the river over the weekend, which was so small it could almost be termed a leak. This incident marks the largest earthquake in Myrdalsjökull this year, with a total of five quakes measuring magnitude three or larger recorded so far in 2024.

As the seismic activity continues, residents in the region remain alert but are reassured that such tremors are not unusual for the season.
