The government’s policy on waste management has raised concerns among municipalities.

As per the Municipal Association’s review of the proposed waste management regulation, it appears that the local sector, including both the waste management company IRF and individual municipalities, will need to invest tens of millions of kroner. However, it is understood that the government will not contribute financially.

The demands outlined in the regulation are so stringent and comprehensive that most municipal recycling and waste collection sites will have to shut down. Currently, no municipality has the means to meet the requirements set forth in the regulation.

In effect, municipalities are being tasked with financing the government’s environmental policy.

To put it simply, this means that local communities are likely to have to close their regional recycling facilities. The Municipal Association firmly asserts that this situation is unacceptable.

They call on the national government to halt this initiative and to address the issues effectively. The Association also notes that this proposal has not been developed in consultation with the municipalities, despite claims to the contrary in the initial statements.
