Medication-related patient injuries that qualify for compensation primarily involve anticoagulants, antibiotics, or combinations of multiple medications. According to a statement from the Patient Insurance Center, such injuries from medical treatments are, in fact, rare. They account for only four percent of all compensable patient injuries.

Compensated medication errors include instances where a patient has been administered an incorrect dosage or an entirely wrong medication. However, side effects from medications are not compensable as patient injuries if the medication has been prescribed and administered appropriately.
