Survey reveals 45% satisfaction with Halla Tómasdóttir’s presidency in Iceland

A recent survey conducted by Maskína reveals that 45% of respondents are satisfied with the performance of Iceland’s President Halla Tómasdóttir, marking the first evaluation of her presidency since she took office on August 1, 2024. Meanwhile, 44.3% reported feeling neutral—neither satisfied nor dissatisfied—with her actions during the same period. Additionally, 10% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction, with 5.1% indicating they were somewhat dissatisfied and 5.3% very dissatisfied.

In comparison, former President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, who assumed office in 2016, had 67% satisfaction in his first survey. At that time, 24% felt neutral, while 10% reported dissatisfaction. Throughout Guðni’s tenure, satisfaction ratings remained higher than those recorded for Halla in her initial survey.

The Maskína survey was conducted from September 16 to September 24, 2024, involving 1,067 participants randomly selected from the National Register. Respondents were aged 18 and older and represented various regions across the country.

Looking back at yearly averages, Guðni Th. enjoyed a satisfaction rating of 71% during his first year, a trend that continued with increasing approval in subsequent years. As of now, Halla Tómasdóttir’s presidency is still in the early stages, and further evaluations will be necessary to gauge public sentiment moving forward.
