Investigations have begun in the Finnish cities of Imatra and Riihimäki to determine if the operations of a proposed national nature and hunting culture museum might be effectively split between the two locations. The plan for the museum in Imatra has been in the works since 2021, with the intention of closing the Finnish Hunting Museum in Riihimäki and relocating its operations there. However, the feasibility of retaining some operations in Riihimäki is currently being considered by a newly formed working group.

According to Tea Laitimo, the CEO of the Finnish Nature Museum Foundation, the new museum would operate as a single entity with locations in both cities. The Riihimäki site would utilize the existing facilities of the Finnish Hunting Museum. Laitimo noted that careful planning is essential to avoid duplication of services and unnecessary costs.

Discussions have suggested that Riihimäki could focus on showcasing the history of hunting and weaponry, while retaining collections such as firearm and trophy collections, as well as an outdoor library and archives. In contrast, Imatra aims to highlight its strengths in waterways, fishing, nature, and gathering economies.

Both Laitimo and Kari Kuparinen, chairman of the Hunting Museum Association, emphasize that no decisions have been made about the multi-site operation yet. They hope to establish a division of responsibilities by the end of the year.

Plans for the museum in Imatra are nearing completion and are intended to be housed in the current town hall, with a projected opening date in 2028. However, funding remains uncertain, with the foundation aiming to propose investment funding in the Eastern Finland action program by the end of the year and seeking direct EU funding for the investment. The decision on the museum’s name will also be forthcoming, with a preference for a concise and straightforward title.
