New treason investigation opens in Finland as police probe alleged disclosure of state secrets
In Finland, another suspected case of treason has emerged, as confirmed by the West Uusimaa Police Department. The investigation revolves around the alleged disclosure of state secrets, which began earlier this year. However, the police remain tight-lipped about the specifics of the case.
According to the police, “The investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be provided.” They did not disclose the number of suspects or the alleged location of the crime. Despite this reticence, the legal implications can be inferred from the nature of the allegations. The disclosure of security secrets falls under serious criminal offenses, with potential prison sentences ranging from four months to a maximum of four years. Individuals can be convicted for unlawfully acquiring, disclosing, transmitting, or expressing information classified for Finland’s external security.
In recent years, several reports regarding the disclosure of security secrets have been filed with the police. Earlier in the year, it was reported that at least three conscripts were under investigation for such allegations, linked to filming in prohibited areas during their service. All incidents occurred in 2023. It remains unclear if the current investigation in West Uusimaa is of a similar nature.
The Uusimaa Brigade operates in Dragsvik, Raasepori, within the West Uusimaa Police jurisdiction. The police have not commented on whether the investigation is connected to the military base, and the brigade has declined to provide a statement.
Last week, it was disclosed that the preliminary investigation of a related case at the Niinisalo garrison in Kankaanpää has concluded, with the Defense Forces considering referral to prosecution.
