Bonnesen sentenced to prison for fraud in Sweden

Birgitte Bonnesen, the former CEO of Swedbank, has been sentenced to one year and three months in prison for serious fraud, following statements she made to the media in 2018-2019. The Svea Court of Appeal found that she provided misleading information during interviews with Swedish media while Swedbank was facing allegations of money laundering.

Bonnesen remarked that she was “deeply shocked” and “devastated” by the verdict, expressing confusion over her sentencing and initially believing she would only face a fine of 800 SEK. She described the court’s decision as “incomprehensible” and emphasized that she was acquitted on similar charges in a lower court. While she was convicted of serious fraud in the appeal, she was cleared of other accusations, including disclosing insider information.

In the case, prosecutors had sought a two-year prison sentence, alleging that Bonnesen concealed what she and the bank’s leadership knew regarding money laundering activities linked to Swedbank. The court determined that her statements during media interviews around the bank’s third-quarter report in 2018 were misleading.

Reflecting on the situation, Bonnesen stated that she would do everything within her power to overturn the ruling. When asked if she regretted any actions from that period, she recognized the tendency for hindsight criticism but preferred to keep her reflections private, asserting that the court’s finding against her remains as incomprehensible today as it did at the time of her initial conviction.
