On Wednesday, prosecutors charged a 40-year-old woman with the murder of her eight-month-old baby. The infant’s death occurred in Vuosaar, Helsinki, between late May and early June 2024.

Special prosecutor Yrjö Reenilä stated that there is no further information to be provided at this stage. The police received notification of the child’s death from the emergency services on Wednesday morning, June 12. By the time officers arrived, the infant was already deceased.

According to initial police investigations, the cause of death was determined to be malnutrition and dehydration. Investigators estimated that the fatal events took place between May 24 and June 12. Notably, the accused had contacted emergency services herself on June 12.

During interrogations, the suspect provided some form of explanation for the circumstances leading to the child’s death, but investigators found her explanation lacking in credibility. This assertion was made by lead investigator and detective commissioner Tuomas Lindholm in a statement issued in June.
