New residential area opens in Kópavogur, Reykjanes Peninsula

On the Reykjanes Peninsula, a new residential area known as Grindvíkinganýlenda has emerged in Kópavogur. Located near Silfursmára and Sunnusmára, approximately 70 families have purchased apartments in this new development, bringing an estimated 150 residents from Grindavík to the area. Many of the newcomers appreciate encountering familiar faces in this new setting.

Ragnheiður Þóra, one of the residents, observes that the sense of community remains strong. “When I go out to take out the trash, someone always greets me from a balcony. It can take 20 minutes to half an hour just to take out the trash because you run into people along the way,” she explains. Birna Rún compares this experience to when locals would stop and chat while shopping at the local Nettó store in Grindavík. “My mind often drifts back home, almost every day. But it doesn’t hurt as much as it did at first,” she adds.

Ragnheiður has moved six times since November, which she describes as a record for her. “Now I can stay here until I feel like moving again,” she states.

In addition, there are concerns about housing availability in Reykjanesbær, as around twenty individuals are currently without homes. Plans are underway for four new tiny houses to be built to alleviate some of the housing pressure. The community continues to face challenges, especially regarding addiction issues, while adapting to changes brought about by this new neighborhood development.
