Wolves sightings increase in Western Uusimaa prompting police advisories in Finland

The number of wolves has increased in Western Uusimaa, according to the region’s office of the Finnish Wildlife Agency and local police reports. This year, the Western Uusimaa Police have received more sightings of wolves than in previous years, with reports coming from both emergency services and citizens. For instance, earlier in August, wolves killed a pony at a stable in Siuntio.

If a wolf poses a threat or danger, police advise calling the emergency number 112. For tracking wolf footprints, residents should contact local wildlife coordination representatives. It is important for sightings to be reported as close to real-time as possible; some reports come in days later or are based on second-hand information. Detailed descriptions of the sighting location, time, and any distinctive features of the wolf are crucial. Additionally, photos and videos can be submitted to help verify the sightings.

In Western Uusimaa, police have made two decisions to disperse wolves this autumn. Although a wolf may pose a threat due to its loss of fear of humans, attacks on people are exceedingly rare. Police take concrete action in situations where a wolf remains in a neighborhood, stalks individuals, or exhibits threatening behavior. They also intervene if a wolf has already caused injury or attempted to attack pets.

There have been a few reported instances this autumn of wolves following individuals walking dogs in Western Uusimaa, along with cases of wolves killing or injuring livestock. Furthermore, during the summer and early autumn, the Finnish Wildlife Agency issued one permit for safety reasons and another for damage control relating to the killing of wolves.

Residents are encouraged to disperse wolves from managed properties or pastures without harming the animals. This can be achieved by using noise-making devices or bright lights during twilight hours.
