Helsinki to discuss major transformation plans for Kaivokatu street

What would it be like to hear the rustling of leafy trees on Kaivokatu in Helsinki during the summer? Or to pull a sled on fresh snow along the street in winter without the fear of being run over by a car? These visions are being offered by urban planners as part of significant transformation proposals for the heart of Helsinki.

Starting next week, city politicians will begin discussions on these plans. The proposed traffic changes build upon a decision made in 2021 to ambitiously expand pedestrian areas in the city center. The aim is to make the downtown area more attractive, accessible, and functional.

One of the most notable changes would involve banning through traffic along Kaivokatu, transforming it into a public transport corridor near the main train station. Traffic would be redirected to South and North Esplanade streets.

Concerns from local entrepreneurs regarding restrictions on car traffic have been acknowledged, and it is proposed to maintain two lanes for vehicles on the Esplanades. The recent street experiment, which removed one lane in each direction for pedestrians, cycling, and terraces, is set to be reversed.

Planners believe that converting Kaivokatu into a public transport street will significantly enhance the livability of the area around the train station. The revitalization efforts are deemed essential for maintaining a vibrant center that attracts visitors and residents.

The project is expected to be completed in the early 2030s, with discussions and decisions continuing this autumn regarding the broader redevelopment plans, including areas like Kaisaniemi Park and the South Harbor. There is also a proposal to extend a service tunnel to ensure efficient supply and distribution traffic in the city center.
