Water tower cladding falls in Muurola, Rovaniemi

Part of the exterior cladding from a water tower has fallen to the ground in Muurola, Rovaniemi. The Lapland Rescue Service received a report about the incident on Tuesday morning at around 9:30 a.m., according to on-duty fire chief Tuomas Korhonen.

A concerned citizen notified the authorities about a piece of cladding that had dropped from the water tower. “It’s hard to say exactly when it fell; it could have been last week or even last year. There were pieces on the ground,” explained Korhonen.

In response, the rescue service has cordoned off the immediate area around the water tower with caution tape. Korhonen noted that falling debris from the tower could pose serious injury risks to anyone nearby. “If someone is unfortunate enough to be directly in its path, they could be seriously harmed,” he assessed.

However, Korhonen considers the likelihood of such an incident occurring to be low. “The chance of a piece landing on someone is perhaps as likely as being struck by lightning, though it is a possibility,” he reflected.
