Electricity production halted at Olkiluoto 2 facility in Finland due to generator fault

Monday 9th September 2024 on 09:25 in Finland

Electricity production at the Olkiluoto 2 facility will be halted today, Monday, Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) announced. The shutdown is expected to last for at least three weeks, as informed by TVO on Monday morning. This estimate is based on the company’s previous experiences with generator malfunctions, and it may be refined as investigations progress.

The reason for the production halt is a generator fault. TVO reported that moisture was detected in the turbine facility’s generator on Monday morning. Currently, the specifics of the fault cannot be disclosed. “At this stage, we are unable to provide more details about the issue. We will conduct a thorough investigation once the electricity production is suspended,” stated TVO’s communications manager, Johanna Aho.

Olkiluoto 2 had just undergone annual maintenance earlier this spring, and no signs of such a malfunction had been detected at that time. The shutdown of power generation was initiated around 7:30 AM. According to TVO, there is no impact on nuclear safety due to this issue. “The actual nuclear reaction occurs within the reactor building. The fault we are currently observing is in the turbine facility,” Aho clarified.

The situation is being monitored closely, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
