Climber survives miraculous 20-meter fall at Kastárfjall near Hornafjörður

An international mountain climber survived a miraculous fall of approximately 20 meters off a cliff at Kastárfjall near Hornafjörður last Thursday. The climber fell while running, became unconscious, and plunged down the cliff. It is believed that losing consciousness before the fall may have been beneficial for his survival.

According to local rescue officials, the climber fell in stages, first skidding down a slope before experiencing a free fall for about 10 to 12 meters. The area is mostly without mobile phone reception, but he managed to establish contact after the fall.

The chances of surviving such a fall are often considered slim, yet the man escaped with only minor injuries, leading rescuers to deem him extremely fortunate. Following treatment, he continued his travels around the country.

In addition to their physical risks, mountain climbing activities in the region have raised concerns due to changing weather conditions, prompting local authorities to advise caution for hikers and climbers.
