Heavy rain causes flooding and disruption at Jyväskylä’s Paviljonki in Central Finland

In Central Finland, heavy rain from Friday to Saturday led to significant water accumulation, exceeding typical August rainfall levels, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Notably, the newly renovated exhibition halls at Jyväskylä’s Paviljonki were affected, with two halls repurposed for the Jyväskylä City Theatre. Juha Rahko, the managing director of Jyväskylä Messe, reported that flooding occurred in all halls on Friday due to a failure of a drainage pipe in the new large theater auditorium, causing water to pour into the audience area. Fortunately, the staff present managed to dry the floors with industrial vacuums and brooms.

Despite the flooding, a corporate event for 500 participants and a big band concert by the Finnish Air Force went on as scheduled in separate hall areas. The total floor space of the Paviljonki is nearly equivalent to three football fields, and Rahko expressed concerns that the city’s drainage system is inadequate for the large roof, which collects rainwater in only a few spots. He emphasized the need for Jyväskylä’s Facilities Services to evaluate the building’s resilience to future rainfalls.

The damage from the flooding appears limited to the replacement of carpets and curtains, with further assessments ongoing for any potential damages in the new theater area. Recovery efforts around Jyväskylä are expected to continue throughout the week. Issues such as washed-out streets and flooded retail spaces, including the Prisma stores, have also been reported. So far, major damages have been avoided, though water infiltration was noted in various shops, prompting assessments from the rescue services in response to multiple flood-related alerts.
